Dar Teta cafe sits comfortably on Murray Street in Colac as a spot where Middle Eastern flavors meet a welcoming, casual atmosphere. It blends the ease of a cafe with the scope of a restaurant, making it a versatile stop whether you’re grabbing a laid-back coffee or settling in for a full meal.

Locals seem to appreciate Dar Teta for both its coffee and its food, especially the way traditional dishes are brought to the table with fresh, thoughtful touches. The Turkish coffee here stands out, brewed with a unique house blend that includes cardamom, and typically served with a small sweet treat. This detail makes it a favored place for those looking to pause and enjoy a quiet moment, perhaps with a book or some study time.

The menu offers a solid range of Middle Eastern staples that lean more into home-cooked comfort than trendiness. Small plates like the Foul Mudammas Dip and Three Dips with Bread invite sharing and leisurely tasting. For a heartier sit-down, options such as the Chicken Kebab and Mixed Kofta provide a satisfying meal, although some visitors note portions on larger dishes like the kofta can be modest compared to price.

The atmosphere inside is cozy and welcoming, with staff known for their friendliness and attentiveness, contributing to a slower-paced, relaxed dining experience. This makes it a suitable spot for a mid-morning brunch or a casual lunch, especially as the kitchen settles into the day. Arriving slightly after standard opening times might help avoid any early-rush delays or menu limitations.

Dar Teta works well for locals who appreciate a touch of Middle Eastern culinary culture without stepping too far out of their routine — whether it’s a breakfast featuring the Gari Breakfast Plate or a midday coffee break. The combination of traditional cooking, warm service, and a quiet, unhurried vibe supports both solo visitors looking to read or study and groups catching up over shared dishes.

If you’re passing through Colac and want a calm spot to enjoy some flavorful, well-prepared food or a comforting coffee, Dar Teta cafe offers an understated but authentic experience anchored in its local neighborhood.

Great food and wonderful atmosphere! The falafel were freshly made and delicious, and the Turkish coffee is made with a home blend including cardamom. The drinks were served with a complementary sweet. A cosy place to study and relax. Will definitely come back again!

Had the hummus and kofta last month. Food was delicious, however the koftas were two almost palm-sized patties - I felt it was overpriced given the amount of food that was served.

Delicious food. It took a bit longer to arrive as we were a half hour before lunchtime and the lunch menu wasn't ready yet. Our options were supposed to have tabbouleh but didn't, maybe because it wasn't ready yet? We had two types of pickled cabbage instead. Pita breads were outstanding.

My husband and I regularly travel down the great ocean road from Melbourne and this was the best meal we have ever had on our journeys! Even better than what we have on offer in Melbourne! Food is fresh and homely, delicious and hearty. We enjoyed it so much we went back the following day. I’m a vegetarian and the options were fantastic. My partner eats meat and also loved his choices. Will definitely be coming back again and trying even more of the menu.

Lovely little place in the middle of Colac. A hidden gem! The lady serving us was warm, helpful and so accomodating. She was prompt in her service and brought a bowl for our little dog to have water. We sat outside and enjoyed some delicious food. The wait was not long at all, everything was freshly made and came out hot. The highlight was a delicious traditional coffee that as the lady described, was “food for our souls”. Highly recommend this amazing place!

The food was very tasty, a bite isn’t just a bite it’s a burst of middle eastern flavour in your mouth. Reminds you of grandmas cooking. May not be normal but unique and very nice coffee. Heavily recommend.
